NorQuest Language Training graduate Cristina Figueiredo (right) was delighted to receive the 1st Annual Premier's Award of Student Success, which was presented to her by the Honourable Premier Ralph Klein (left) and NorQuest College Board of Governor's Chair Wendy Kinsella at the Premier's Celebration of Student Success event on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

The Honourable Premier Ralph Klein joined students, staff, and community leaders at NorQuest College on Wednesday, Oct. 26 to celebrate the academic achievements of NorQuest students.

The NorQuest College 1st Annual Premier's Celebration of Student Success was highlighted with the awarding of a $1,000 scholarship – The Premier's Award of Student Success – to deserving NorQuest College graduate Cristina Figueiredo.

“NorQuest College has an important role to play in making sure Albertans have the skills they need to take advantage of the tremendous job opportunities that exist across the province,” said Premier Ralph Klein. “I'm honoured to be associated with an award that will help students make the most of these opportunities.”

NorQuest College President Dr. Wayne Shillington says the Premier's Award recognizes the unique achievements of NorQuest students, many of whom overcome significant obstacles in order to move forward in life.

“Student success inspires everything we do at NorQuest and what better way to tell our story than through the personal achievements of our students,” said Wayne.

Award-winner Cristina Figueiredo, who moved to Canada with her family in 1999 to escape the dangers of her native Brazil, says it's a wonderful gift to be singled out by the College for this prestigious honour.

“There is a path in life in getting what you want and NorQuest definitely put me on the right path,” said Cristina, who completed the Language Training program at NorQuest. Cristina's path has since led the former engineer to the University of Alberta where she recently graduated with a Master of Science degree.
